How to play Backgammon

Choose a round of Backgammon and settle into its rules. Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Choose a clear next step rather than rushing through the instructions. Begin with the local players mode shown on the page. Check the relevant rule before repeating a move.

Local two players; no doubling cube, stakes or remote matching.

A useful comparison

Compare the worked example with your own position. Use the reasoning, not an answer copied from a different board. Make the next step deliberately.

Your goal

Bear off all fifteen pieces before the opponent. Keep that objective in view throughout the round. Return to the instructions when a step is unclear.

Step by step

  1. Roll and use the maximum legal number of dice; doubles give four moves.
  2. Enter barred pieces first.
  3. Points with at least two enemies are blocked; a lone enemy is hit.
  4. Bear off only after all pieces reach home.

Controls

Click or tap a piece and destination; use the turn indicator and legal-move feedback. On a smaller screen, keep the active part of the board within view. Check any mode label before starting.

A useful example

When only one die can be used and either is individually playable, use the larger die. Apply the same reasoning to the position in your own round. Verify the rule before continuing.

Watch out for this

An oversized bear-off requires no piece farther from the exit. Take a moment to reassess the position before continuing. Keep the stated aim separate from side details such as animation or appearance. Progress is measured by the game’s own completion or scoring rules.
